Franchise FAQ: Your Most Common Questions Answered

Getting Started

How much does it cost to franchise my business?

The total cost to franchise your business ranges from $15,000 to $50,000, including:

  • Platform/software: $3,000–$10,000 (Franchise Builder plans start at $299/month)
  • Legal document preparation: Included with Franchise Builder's AI-powered FDD Builder
  • State registration fees: $250–$1,000 per registration state (14 states require registration)
  • Trademark registration: $350–$500 per class
  • Financial audit: $2,000–$8,000 (required for FDD financial statements)

Traditional franchise consultants charge $50,000–$150,000 for the same work.

How long does it take to franchise my business?

With Franchise Builder: 4–8 weeks for core development (operations manual, FDD, financial models, training programs). State registration adds 2–8 weeks per state.

With traditional consultants: 6–12 months.

Do I need a franchise attorney?

Yes — but you don't need to pay one $50,000 to draft your documents. With Franchise Builder, the AI generates your FDD and operations manual, and you hire a franchise attorney for review only ($2,000–$8,000). Use the Attorney Review Service to coordinate this.

What makes a business franchise-ready?

A franchise-ready business has:

  • A proven, profitable model
  • Repeatable systems that can be taught
  • A recognizable brand
  • Healthy margins (15%+ after fees)
  • Market demand for multiple locations

Take the Readiness Quiz to find out if your business is ready.

Legal & Compliance

What is an FDD?

The Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) is the legally required document that discloses your franchise offering to prospective franchisees. It contains 23 specific items of information mandated by the FTC. Use the FDD Builder to create yours.

Which states require franchise registration?

14 states require FDD registration before you can sell franchises: California, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

3 additional states (Florida, Texas, Utah) require filing but not full registration.

Can I sell franchises nationwide without registering in every state?

You can sell in non-registration states immediately after your FDD is complete. For the 14 registration states, you must register first. You cannot legally advertise or sell in a registration state without registering.

What is Item 19?

Item 19 of the FDD is the Financial Performance Representation — where you disclose earnings information to prospective franchisees. It's optional, but including it dramatically increases franchise sales because buyers want to see the numbers.

Financial

How do I set my franchise fee?

Most franchise fees range from $25,000 to $50,000. Consider your industry, the total investment required, and what competitors charge. Use the Financial Modeler to find the right number.

What royalty rate should I charge?

Most royalties are 4%–8% of gross sales, with 6% being the most common. Your royalty should fund your ongoing support costs and leave room for profit.

How do franchisees pay royalties?

Typically monthly, based on gross sales. Some franchisors use POS-integrated reporting; others require manual reporting. The Royalty Manager automates this process.

How much revenue does a franchisor make?

A franchisor with 50 franchisees averaging $500,000 in annual sales at a 6% royalty generates $1,500,000/year in royalty revenue, plus initial franchise fees of $1,250,000+ (at $25,000 each).

Operations

Do I need an operations manual?

Yes — it's essential. Your operations manual is the playbook franchisees follow to replicate your success. Without it, franchisees can't maintain your standards. Use the Manual Builder to create yours.

How long should franchisee training be?

Most franchise training programs are 1–4 weeks: 1–2 weeks of classroom training at your headquarters, plus 1–2 weeks of on-the-job training at a model location. Use the Training Tracker to build and manage your program.

How do I define territories?

Territories are typically defined by population (50,000–200,000 people), radius (1–10 miles), or geographic boundaries (ZIP codes, counties). Use the Territory Manager to map yours.
